Wee Heavy Project Update

Posted by on January 26, 2013

A group met at Andy’s house on 1/20 to brew the pilot batch of Dr John’s #200 brew- Wee Heavy.  This is the recipe that won a Silver certificate in the first round of the 1999 AHA national home brew competition.  Given continuMilligans Wee Heavyed interest, the goal is to brew a big batch to age in a 55 gal bourbon barrel.

According to Andy, the brew day turned out to be a big success.   “We ended up with two beers, the big one was ~1.112 and the small one was ~1.070.  We pitched both beer and hit them with O2 around 7:00 pm last night and this morning both of the beers are fermenting away nicely.”

The grist for this 8 gal batch consisted of over 50lb of Malts, and it was mashed in a 55 gal vessel (below).  The first runnings of this brew were dark and sweet, and made for a very nice ” Hot Scotchie” !
