February 2023 Meeting Minutes

Posted by on February 18, 2023
February 16, 2022
Fossil Cove Brewery, Fayetteville

7:18 PM – Meeting called to order with toast by our 2023 Mug Watcher, Keith Linn.

New Attendees

There was a large crowd and due to noise there was some difficulty in catching all the names:
  • Reese
  • Kay
  • Patrick
  • Parker

Old Business

Lydia was presented the Golden Chalice as last month’s B.O.M. Suitably impressed, she was.

Frost Fest was held on February 4th with servers from both FLOPS and Oz in attendance. Lines were long for the homebrew, or so we were told.

The Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter held a Homebrew Tasting and Competition and raised $6000 to help the cause. Randy Germann half-breed FLOPS-OZ member won brewers choice. Well deserved.

The Club Social was held at Boston Mountain Brewing on February 3rd. Boston Mountain released “Dark Alliance” a delicious bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout. Nice crowd. The smart people in attendance picked up couple of bombers of the stuff, for while it was tasty in early February it has the chance to be absolutely dynamite in December 2023. Just saying.

New Business

Ben Mills of Fossil Cove presented the FLOPS club a check for $7500 from the profits of the joint FLOPS / Fossil Cove project “Old Toe Sucker” as a donation to help us grow the home brewing community in Northwest Arkansas. It is the club’s intention to establish a committee to provide recommendations on how best to invest these funds. If you would like to nominate someone to be on this committee, let Patrick or Daniel know. You can self-nominate.

Since so many of the local homebrewers participate meaningfully with both FLOPS and OZ, a proposal was put forth to make the competition individually focused, it stead of brew club focus. This motion was seconded and passed.

Daniel has talked with a Dr. Scott of the University of Arkansas Brewing Science program. He seems interested in meeting us, stay tuned.

Boston Mountain Brewing will have a Big Paws fundraiser on March 31. It was proposed to make this the March social. Proposal was seconded and approved.

Upcoming competitions:

Ben offered to partner with anyone in the GABF pro-am competition. The catch is that someone needs to win a National Homebrew Competition award.

The 2023 Home Brew Showcase to benefit the Siloam Springs Center for the Arts will be held on May 13. Kolin is still looking for brewers to present, entries are capped at 15. Google will lead you to the entry page.

Education

Kevin Elsken gave presentation about when, why, and how to use a cereal mash in homebrewing. A copy of the presentation can be found here.
