Saddlebock Picks a Winner

http://www.saddlebock.com/content/media/images/saddlebock_logo_headeri.pngSpringdale’s own Saddelbock Brewery hosted a recipe competition on February 2nd (Groundhogs Day) to determine the breweries recipe for their new IPA offering.  Proceeds from the contest’s $3.00 entry fee were donated to the Single Parent Scholarship fund.

Eleven FLOPS brewers went head-to -head at  US Pizza and Saddelbock’s owner, Steve Rehbock, declared a clear winner and felt that the winning recipe work work pretty much  as is.  Steve was planning for a  small group of FLOPS members to get together for a panel tasting to confirm and discuss conformity to style Guidelines.

Congratulations to Tim Keltner and his  Citra Hopped IPA.  He received 88 more points than  2nd place finisher Tony Canova’s entry. Helen Ames ( on her first brew ever!) and Ken Gillespie rounded off the top four.

Saddelbock is currently brewing pilot batches and is eager to get the new offering on tap- and at a retailer near you!

When the soon to be named IPA goes into production a portion of the proceeds will be donated to FLOPS general fund.

Wee Heavy Project Update

A group met at Andy’s house on 1/20 to brew the pilot batch of Dr John’s #200 brew- Wee Heavy.  This is the recipe that won a Silver certificate in the first round of the 1999 AHA national home brew competition.  Given continuMilligans Wee Heavyed interest, the goal is to brew a big batch to age in a 55 gal bourbon barrel.

According to Andy, the brew day turned out to be a big success.   “We ended up with two beers, the big one was ~1.112 and the small one was ~1.070.  We pitched both beer and hit them with O2 around 7:00 pm last night and this morning both of the beers are fermenting away nicely.”

The grist for this 8 gal batch consisted of over 50lb of Malts, and it was mashed in a 55 gal vessel (below).  The first runnings of this brew were dark and sweet, and made for a very nice ” Hot Scotchie” !

DIY Stir Plate
