November Meeting Minutes:

Welcome to first time visitors: Chris, Alvarro, & Reese.

The soft opening at Natural State Brewing on Tuesday was a hit, with loads of great beers. Fun was had by all.

The Iron Brewer Competition with the Ozark Zymurgists will be held at the January FLOPS meeting, the style is English Brown Ale (13B).

Recent Event Summaries: GermannFest was awesome, Brewtober was as well, with Randy Germann taking the Green Jacket for his award winning cider / butterbeer.

No update on the Barrel Project, Christopher Abel will continue to be the lead.

Rules and scoring system for a new “Member of the Year” award will be posted soon so that we can vote to create this new category of award. The spirit of the award is for those folks who may not brew a bunch, but contribute significantly to the club and it’s membership.

If you have competed/stewarded/participated in any competitions this year or received any BJCP certifications, please submit evidence of those to Keith Linn to contribute to your Brewer of the Year points.

The Annual FLOPS Christmas Party will be held on December 14th at Kat’s House. An official event will be posted on the Paid Members Facebook page with all the details.

OZ is working on a 4 state brewing competition and could use volunteers / organizers. Hit up Larry McCallister for more info.

The 2020 Q1 Iron Brewer competition will be a SMASH, single malt, single hop, any yeast. Judging will be Best of Show style.

An officer’s meeting will be scheduled soon to discuss club status with regards to 501C status, and determine the best path forward for domain and website hosting.

The education segment consisted of evaluating leftover bottles from Brewtoberfest with official BJCP scoring sheets to guess the style, and to practice scoring. Styles and official scores were presented after the group conducted their scoring for comparison.

Brewer of the Month: Patrick Bohannan for his OctoberFest (v1 & 2).

Ass of the Month: Paul Cascade, because we all voted different, just like Paul.

Meeting minutes from the October Meeting:

Meetings will now be held at Apple Blossom Brewing in Fayetteville. This was the last meeting at the BGO.

Barrell Project Update: Still waiting to confirm with Ben regarding a barrel, Christopher Abel is going to get with Ben for the plan.

October’s Social event will be GermannFest which will be held at Randy Germann’s place (invites to be sent later) on Learn to HomeBrew Day (11/2).

Keith Linn mentioned that he is approaching his 100th brew, and is planning a brew-in at his place in the upcoming weeks. He is keeping an eye on the weather and will post the event when it’s scheduled. keep your eyes open for it.

Treasurer’s Report from Christopher Abel: We still got MONAY!

Iron Brewer FLOPS vs OZ judging is this weekend (Kevin Elsken and James Spurlin are both entering). The style is Red Ale per BJCP guidelines. Larry McCallister is bringing beers up to the comp for judging if you want to enter.

Little Rocktoberfest is coming up Sept 21st, Larry McCallister and James Spurlin are the only brewers participating so far.

Brewtoberfest is coming up Oct 26, now with BJCP judging AND People Choice voting! See Tom Maddock with any questions on that.

Nominations and volunteers for new club officers are now being accepted via the FLOPS Club Paid Members page, with voting being done in person at the October meeting. If you want to vote, you better be there. A motion was presented and carried to nominate all existing officers in their current roles. I’ll create a post listing the current officers and their positions.

We enjoyed an excellent presentation about efficiency by Kevin Elsken, excellent job, even though it was a bit math -heavy 🙂

Report of competition participation: Becky got 1st place at Little Rocktoberfest for Butter Beer. Becky also received 2nd place at the Arkansas State Fair for Sinful Cider, and Larry took 1st for his Helles Lager (BJCP sanctioned competition). Randy got 1st place at Brewtober for Rauchbier. Forrest received honorable mention at Brewtober for Dark Czech Lager. Keith won Alaskan homebrew smoked beer competition.
Club reaffirmed that we will reimburse shipping fees for competitions.

OFFICER’S REPORT

PRIMARY – No new news.

SECONDARY – Styles of beer have been decided for each quarter of the Iron Brewer competition with an introduction and plans to provide beer samples for next quarter Iron Brewer competition on the first month of that quarter. Competition is held the final month of that quarter.

Iron Brewer Competition Schedule:

1st Quarter (March competition) – Irish Ales (Irish Red Ale, Irish Stout, Irish Extra Stout) (Category 15 of the 2015 BJCP Guidelines)

2nd Quarter (June competition) – IPA ++ (Specialty, Any Addition, Non-Conformist)

3rd Quarter (September competition) – Saison (Sub-category 25B of the 2015 BJCP guidelines)

4th Quarter (December competition) – Strong Ale/High Gravity

TREASURER – “We have money.” Everyone needs to pay 2017 member dues. Club still needs a home for banking.
